One Year Appointment
Well, at 13 months, Jack finally went in for his 1 year appointment with Dr. V. All in all, he's in great health and progressing quite well. The boy has grown another 1 and 3/4 inches since his 9 month appointment. The nurse said "well, they're supposed to slow down with the growing at this age" and I said "this is slowing down for him!" So, he's now 33 3/4 inches long, only 27 3/4 inches shorter than me! How strange it is to have your one year old be more than half as tall as you. He weighs quite a bit less than me, coming it at 27lbs 9oz.
According to Dr. V., all is well. He'd like him to drink a little water before bed so he doesn't have formula sitting in his mouth all night. We'll work on that. He said that he can start drinking cow's milk as long as he's eating plenty of good, iron-rich foods. He said that Jack's power struggles (wanting to dominate the book during our reading times, for instance) are ok and to be expected. He actually got giddy because he swore that Jack took a step while he was there. We laughed and said "no, not yet." I think Dr. V. was hoping to be there for the first steps!
He wished us Happy Holidays in case we didn't see him at the local coffee and donut shop between now and the end of the year. We wished him well and then waited for his nurse, Mary, to come give Jack his immunizations. Today he had four: MMR, Prevnar, Chicken Pox, and his Flu booster. We discussed the chicken pox vaccine and Dr. V. is very strongly in favor of it since he has seen a child die of chicken pox. He loves kids and wants to protect them. One of the many reasons we love our doc- just a mild-mannered, very loving, very sweet person.
Jack cried and cried when he got his shots. When she finished I was able to scoop him up and give him his bottle, but he still whimpered at the pain and pulled at the bandages on his thighs, thinking they were the problem. Poor little guy. He calmed down while Kyle went and checked out. We hopefully won't be back until next March for his next routine checkup. And, lucky for Jack, his shots are all done until Kindergarten!
