Birthday Festivities: Year Three
Jack had his third birthday party today. Like Kelly said, we can't believe the peer group is turning three. Kyle and I actually had the conversation this morning while buying chips, wings, and dip that the past three years have flown by pretty quickly. It's hard to believe that Jack is now considered a pre-schooler.
Since Jack's ever-present obsession is Voltron, we attempted to have a semi-Voltron party. We got the local bake shop (which is fab-u-lous) to use an edible image of Voltron on white icing on the yellow cake with raspberry filling that we ordered. Since Voltron is a 20 year old cartoon, I bought a table cover and wrapping paper on Ebay, but it didn't arrive in time. Alas, we had Transformer plates, table cover, and napkins, which were actually a hit with the adults since everyone but us had seen the recent movie and loved it.
Jack had an awesome time with the 6 little friends that came over to play. He announced that his favorite friend is Anna, which is good because Anna's mother and I plan to have them marry in 25 years or so. Jack racked up in the gift department today and our family room is about to burst. This morning when he woke up at 6:45, he and I went downstairs and I allowed him to open one gift- the one from my mother (Grandma). He tore open the back of the paper and saw the Voltron logo and said "She got me a Voltron card!" Then he tore it a little more and saw that it was red and he immediately realized that it was the latest set of DVDs from the series, encased in the metal red lion. He shouted, "It's the red lion! These are my favorite episodes" which cracked me up and sent me reaching for the phone to call grandma, only to find out the battery was dead.
Jack was excited for his party all morning and showed us by singing Happy Birthday to himself incessantly and generally acting like a maniac. He took a nap, but only managed to sleep for an hour and a half before coming downstairs to pace and wait for his friends. They all started arriving around 3pm, loaded with goodies and full of energy. They kids played in the basement and back yard and took turns riding in the motorized truck that we bought Jack when he was done potty training. I came out to the porch and yelled "Who wants cake?" and had a dozen people (kids and grown ups alike) yell back "Me!" and start running for the door. After cake, Jack opened gifts and loved every one of them.
We've played with his crashing police car enough that Jack laughs and shouts out "the spoiler popped off!" when it crashes even though he didn't know what a spoiler was prior to today. He's played with his Star Wars Christmas ornament (gift from me) and we've heard the Star Wars theme about 100 times (but it still doesn't get old). We practiced dumping trash with his big garbage truck from Costco (that he's begged for for at least a year) and flown the Zarkon Zapper around the house as well. He has already started "coloring and markering" in various coloring books that he received and was singing the Diego theme song while coloring in a book of one of his favorite TV characters. Clay and Heather brought a game called Cariboo that we plan to break out and enjoy tomorrow.
Last, but not least, we opened and played with the Moon Sand that Granny and PawPaw brought with them from Florida. Parents reading this blog- DO NOT, I repeat, DO NOT ask the grandparents to get Moon Sand. It's the devil. Not really, it's actually pretty cool once you get going. Let me just advise you to have the kids play with the Moon Sound OUTSIDE. Not at the kitchen table and nowhere near carpet. Please take that advice.
Overall it was a great day. Below are a few pictures of the festivities and Kyle promises to post more tomorrow once he goes through the images on his camera.

Can't believe little Jack is 3! I hope he enjoyed his Voltron cake. Who knew that your one of your childhood obsessions would become his as well?
