Christmas Bonanza 2006

Christmas weekend passed and left us all mightily exhausted. On the 23rd I got an email from the lead of our DBA's telling me that our software upgrade was nearly complete and that the system would be available for me to test and give production approval the next day. Christmas Eve.

Luckily, my parents were in town and were lots of help with Jack. On Saturday we baked cookies (well, mostly I baked cookies with some random drive-bys from Jack and a container of silver dragees) and allowed Jack to open one present because he was beside himself with excitement. He opened a battery-operated Salty, who is a diesel locomotive from the Thomas series. He was thrilled and played with him on his Thomas track for a good part of the evening.

On Christmas Eve I got up early and headed for work. Things were dreadful. I'll explain no more for fear of boring you. Five hours later, I headed back home.

That evening we had Clay & Heather over as well as our next door neighbors A & V and their son Gabriel. Gabe entertained Jack for most of the evening playing trains and watching movies and the rest of us relaxed and drank wine and ate good food and were all very merry. We exchanged gifts with Clay & Heather and everyone headed home. Jack was allowed to open another gift, which was an awesome Wiggles guitar which, in addition to being awesome, will surely drive us insane with its musical medleys.

On Christmas Day, Jack woke up around 7:00 and immediately wanted to go downstairs. We told him that Santa came and he could open presents. He had a good time going through his stocking and trying to eat all of the candy my mom had put in it. The kid racked up enough toys for us to consider bulldozing the house and starting over. It's now imperative that we give away some of his old toys, which is lucky for us since we wanted to anyhow and a friend of ours just had a baby boy a month ago.

Jack was a bit tired and overwhelmed by the whole experience- being home extra days from daycare with us, visitors, parties, and presents had him just out of sorts. So, we did spend a good chunk of the morning alternating between him shouting "Mine!" at us when we tried to help him with a present and crying for no apparent reason. We finally got through all of the gifts, after breaking once for breakfast (eggs with onions & potatoes and bacon), and allowing several play breaks for him to tear around the house and play with the gift he had just opened. Favorites included his new radio-controlled firetruck with Spiderman in the ladder, his new tool set with battery-powered drill, and his fake food & utensil set.

Jack settled down and said goodbye to his grandparents (they had to leave because dad, even though he owns his company, apparently had to work the next day) and took a nice, long nap. When he woke up, we had Christmas Eve leftovers for dinner and played with all of his newly acquired booty. Santa was good to all of us this year indeed.
